A bill for alternative kids
Weezer’s Gathering tour came to Place Bell with The Shins and Silversun Pickups opening, which already made it one of the best alternative bills of the year in Quebec. Then Weezer played twenty-six songs.
The set was a party of their whole history, from the Blue Album to the newer records, and it never slowed down long enough for the arena to sit.

My view of it
Two moments that made it ours
First, “Beverly Hills” rewritten on the spot as “Living in Montréal, Québec”. Second, Rivers Cuomo moving to the drums for “Pork and Beans”, a band that has been doing this for over thirty years still looking for ways to surprise itself.
“Weezer are still the best band in the world at making nerd rock feel like a stadium event.”
The run to the end
The last stretch was all sing-alongs: “Buddy Holly” and “Island in the Sun”, the songs that lived on every burned CD of my youth.

Twenty-six songs and not a dull minute. Weezer still know exactly how to make an arena feel like a basement party.
