Every mastering chain aimed at a dancefloor has the same box in it somewhere. Sum everything below 120 Hz, or 100, or 150, depending on who you ask, to mono. Producers pass the rule around as if it were physics. It is not physics. It is a workaround for a mechanical problem in a machine most people making club records have never seen, and the reason it still works has almost nothing to do with the reason it was invented.

The Groove Is Doing Trigonometry

The machine is a disc cutting lathe, and the problem lives in the geometry of a stereo groove. When the industry settled on the Westrex 45/45 system in 1958, each channel was assigned a groove wall angled at 45 degrees to the vertical. The consequence is arithmetic rather than aesthetics. Horizontal stylus movement carries the sum of the two channels. Vertical movement carries the difference. Anything shared between left and right pushes the cutter side to side. Anything that disagrees between them pushes it up and down.

That distinction is harmless at 3 kHz, where the cutter barely moves. It is not harmless at 40 Hz. A cutter head is built like a very small loudspeaker, and like a loudspeaker it travels furthest at the bottom of the range. Feed it wide, uncorrelated bass and the vertical excursion grows until the groove is cut so shallow in places that the playback stylus is pinched straight out of it. The record does not sound bad. It skips.

Neumann’s answer was the elliptical equaliser, the EE66 and later the EE70, and it is almost comically simple for something that shaped the sound of dance music. Three impedances. A falling inductive reactance introduces crosstalk between the channels as frequency drops, which forces the bottom of the record toward mono and collapses the vertical component. The name is not a description of the filter shape. It comes from the ellipse the engineer watched on the vectorscope, the display that showed how far the signal was leaning into the vertical axis. Squeeze the ellipse, save the cut. Before Neumann productised it, cutting rooms did the same job with tapped inductors, less elegantly.

Three Impedances and an Ellipse

So far this is archaeology. What makes it worth a producer’s attention is that the rule survived the format that required it, and survived for different reasons than the ones that created it.

The first reason is arithmetic again. Two low frequency signals that disagree in phase partly cancel when summed, and a club system sums them whether the producer wants it or not. Sub arrays are almost always fed a single mono send, because low frequencies are omnidirectional enough that stereo placement is inaudible at those wavelengths and because splitting them across a room creates cancellation zones the crowd walks through. A bass part with a wide stereo image does not become wider on a big system. It becomes quieter and less predictable, in a way that changes as the listener moves.

Why the Rule Outlived the Lathe

The second reason is headroom. Out of phase energy in the bottom two octaves eats level without adding loudness. Collapsing it recovers headroom for everything above, which is why engineers noticed that the lathe safety measure also made records hit harder. That side effect got absorbed into taste. The tightness people associate with a well cut twelve inch is partly the sound of a constraint being obeyed.

None of which makes the rule sacred. The crossover point is a judgement, not a standard, and mono summing a pad that lives at 200 Hz will flatten a mix for no benefit. The useful version of the lesson is narrower. The bottom of a record was never a stereo medium in the first place, on vinyl for mechanical reasons and in a club for acoustic ones, and a mix that pretends otherwise is spending energy on an image nobody will hear.

What the Rule Actually Teaches

There is a version of this story that ends with a note about how the old ways were wiser. That is not the story. The engineers at Neumann were not chasing punch. They were trying to stop needles jumping out of grooves, and they built a three component circuit to do it. The aesthetic arrived afterwards, uninvited, and stayed on after the machine that produced it was retired to a handful of cutting rooms. Most studio rules have a history like this if you follow them back far enough. Very few of them were about taste when they started.
